Lorraine Hansberry

"Lorraine Hansberry's talent was even more exceptional given what she was able to do in the 1950s.  At a time when black writers were not being noticed, she was visionary, she was absolutely amazing.

"...Everyone knows raisin a classic American play.  Les Blancs deals with colonialism and The Sign on Sidney Brewstein’s Window is a play not many do because there’s only one black character in it, the rest are white and it deals with issues that center around politics. This is a black writer that wrote a white play, that went to Broadway and was successful.  Now, very often, writers of color... are ghettoized in terms of what they are supposed to write about,  she broke that mold immediately.

...That she died so young was an immeasurable loss to the American theater and to African American theatre because she was just an astounding intellect and a great, great talent."

Stephen Anthony Jones, Artistic Director of San Francisco's Lorraine Hansberry Theatre.
