The Stereotype Threat

The Stereotype Threat The Bounce Report

Professor Claude Steele

Social psychologist Claude Steele’s groundbreaking research goes to the root of the achievement gaps in American society… whether it’s in the classroom, in the workplace… even on the playing field. He calls it “the stereotype threat.”

The Bronze Report's host, Barbara Rodgers visited with Steele at Stanford University where he is currently the I. James Quillen Dean for the School of Education and asked him about the harmful effects of the stereotype threat.

He explained, "It will cause you to ruminate and to worry, elevate your blood pressure, interfere with your working memory, it’s like any kind of stress... it's very disruptive, you start to worry and get concerned and nervous, and distracted."

Steele has reached some powerful conclusions about the deleterious effects of stereotypes on our intellectual performance, sports performance, and our relationships.

You can learn more about the Stereotype Threat in Professor Steele’s book on the subject: Whistling Vivaldi, How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do.
